I'm Sandy Gooch

An American entrepreneur, educator, and pioneer of the natural foods movement, best known as the founder of Mrs. Gooch’s Natural Food Markets, one of the first natural foods supermarket chains in the United States. Before entering the grocery industry, she worked as a public school teacher in California. A serious health crisis in the mid-1970s, involving a life-threatening allergic reaction and sensitivity to chemical additives in processed foods, inspired her to adopt a cleaner lifestyle and seek healthier food alternatives.

Driven by her personal experience and the lack of natural food options available at the time, Gooch opened the first Mrs. Gooch’s Natural Food Market in West Los Angeles in 1977. Her stores became known for strict product standards that excluded many artificial additives, preservatives, sweeteners, and other ingredients she believed were harmful to consumers. These standards became so respected within the industry that retailers and suppliers coined the term “Goochable” to describe products that met her high expectations for quality, nutrition, and ingredient integrity.

Under her leadership, Mrs. Gooch’s expanded to seven successful markets and became one of the highest-grossing natural food chains in the country before being acquired by Whole Foods Market in 1993. Beyond retail, Gooch played an important role in advocating for consumer access to dietary supplements and helped support the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994. She has continued to influence health, education, and entrepreneurship through mentoring, public service, and leadership initiatives, earning numerous honors for her contributions to the natural products industry and consumer wellness.
